Of course, we’re all looking for quality games but there are just some genres that we’re more attracted to than others. You might play a wide variety of games, but perhaps all your eggs are in one basket: all your favorite games in one genre? So…
“What is your Favorite Video Game Genre?“
The Timely Mage
In theory, my favorite genre is RPG however I must say that since I’ve gotten older I haven’t had as much time and attention I once had to sink into a 200 hour gameplay experience so I’ve actually found a good balance with Action Adventure games that have great stories compacted into smaller 20 hour experiences. That being said, I would still say my favorite genre is RPG because of how vast and complex they can be and most of my most beloved games make up the genre.
My least favorite is F2P. It doesn’t matter what type of game it is, making it free to play always seem to suck the life out of it. No matter how fun it may be in the beginning it usually ends up with me wondering why I’m putting so much time and effort into it. Since I know F2P is more of a game model than a genre, I’ll say my least favorite genre is the puzzle category. Puzzles within games are fine but if I’m just solving puzzles for the sake of solving them I don’t find much value in that.
The Black Humor Mage
I don’t really have a favorite game genre. Currently I’m playing two FPS games: Metroid Prime and Overwatch. Before that I played the action/turn-based JRPG Ni No Kuni. After I finish Metroid Prime I plan to play Earthbound, which is another JRPG. And I love Metal Gear Solid, even though there aren’t many other stealth action games I play. I don’t really like racing games, but I love/hate me some Mario Kart. I love playing a lot of 2D platformers like Kirby, Mega Man, and Mario. I just like playing games that are good, and if I like the genre.
MMORPG’s are my least favorite genre. The games themselves are not impressive in the least. They don’t look very good, and the gameplay is usually stale. There’s also a lot of repetitive grinding. That usually happens in order to make it more accessible for multiple people to play it. I know the appeal of these games is the social aspect, because I don’t know of many people that would play these kinds of games as a single player experience. If you like the social aspect, then enjoy it. But that doesn’t do it for me.
The Rage Mage
MOBA gamers are the ultimate rages and just generally the angriest people in the gaming community. If they lose, it’s not their fault and they generally call any other kind of game “weak” or “terrible”. I identify with that. Your answer sucks because it’s not my answer.
And that’s my least favorite genre: your favorite.
The Green Screen Mage
RPGs tend to be my favorite. The story gamer loves RPGs. What a surprise! Getting into the role of the characters was always so much fun to me, especially when you get to make choices that affect the game.
RTS games, on the other hand, are the bane of my existence. I just can’t wrap my head around them. Halo Wars was RTS and it just about killed me. I had to beat it because it was Halo, but I hated the gameplay SOOOO much.
The White Out Mage
I like interactive games that make you have to move in order to play them, like rhythm and music games with dancing and such. I dislike simulation-type games that are really repetitive and force you to do menial tasks and hard labor over and over again, like Terraria or Harvest Moon. Life is work enough to not have to work in a video game.
The Well-Red Mage
My answer is essentially the same as the Timely Mage’s… I have much love for the 2D platformer but RPGs were my bread and butter. Only now they’re more like second breakfast. I don’t have as much time for games that absorb hours and hours. And hours. In my youth, I’d thinking nothing of sinking 100 or 200 hours of gameplay into a single RPG. Now, I find myself attracted to shorter experiences with simplicity and accessibility and nostalgia as their focuses. That leads me to either one of two options, usually: 1) playing games on the NES or SNES, or 2) playing indie games I get a hold of. The RPG will always be my first love, though, just as long as its not too overburdened by complicated tactical gameplay or watered down by too much emphasis on action gameplay. I love the traditional RPG: turn-based, experience points, classes, treasure hunting, dungeon crawling, side questing, but loving RPGs doesn’t prevent me from enjoying most genres (not a fan of FPS games).
And that’s my answer for least favorite genre of all time. I’ve played some swell first-person shooters, but I really don’t care for most of them. They really seem like “cut and paste” projects to me. Homogeneous. And the people who call themselves gamers that just play the new COD every year…? They bug me. But seriously, in order: I go mainly RPGs, FPS’s (Never cod, Aw Hells No!!! I literally would like to go back in time & rip cod out of history FOREVER!!! I’D DO WHATEVER IT TOOK!!!) point n click (NOT Hidden Object cos They Are Not Games Dammit *Knuckles Whiten*) platformers, horror & that’s about it, I think really… Ooh, action adventures, & a couple racers & beat em ups (Ridge Racer 4 cos driftin made it playable, never finished Gran Turismo, never even got 1st license… *Swears loudly* Breaking!!!) & Mortal Kombat & Smash Bros obvs… Ooh again, whatever Mario Party is under too!!
I enjoy a range of genres, FPS, RTS, RPG, etc. My favourite genre is puzzle game, like the Legend of Zelda games. I enjoy games which need the player to use their brain and uses well designed locations.
My least favourite genre are sports games. I find these games boring and am very bad at them. I enjoy some fighting and driving games though.
Wrestling and RPGs. Nuff said.

RPGs because I love a good story, but now that I’m older time is a huge factor. I usually schedule my playtime now because I am an adult!
Second are puzzle games. I need to keep a sharp intellect and they’re excellent whetstones to hone.
Honorable mention goes to platformers. I grew up on those and still enjoy them immensely. Yes even The Impossible Game 😊

By this point, it’s probably becoming obvious that my genre of choice is driving and racing. There’s simply something beautiful about the way we can create vehicles that can take on an identity of their own, unique from others, just because of their look or the way they move. Every automobile has a personality, so they become characters of themselves. There’s something quite balletic about it; man and machine working in synchronicity to make an art out of movement.

I’m not a fan of racing games, personally, because I’ve never been good at them or really into cars. But you’ve expressed the value of these games eloquently enough to raise my impression of them. So thank you! And also, that is one impressive list of racing games!
I’ve probably played them all. But these are just those I can remember right now…
The only racing game I’ve reviewed on here so far has been Rock n’ Roll Racing, and that one is wacky.
RPGs definitely. Japanese, Western, tactical, turn based, action, give them all to me and I’ll lap them all up! If I have the time…… Strategy games are another favorite genre of mine. I would love to see more RTS games, but I’ve taken a liking to 4X and grand strategy games in their absence.
Time flies, generally away.
I’m in the RPG camp as well, but as I get older I’m finding less and less time to invest in to a beefy 40+ hour game. I get to two or three of those a year, between being a caretaker and a full-time student. As a teen and early adult though, I had no problem devouring one a week lol.
Outside of RPG, I’d say horror is a close 2nd place.

I’m an equal opportunity player, I have no favorites. Seriously. If had to put a thumb on it, action games or fighters. But I can’t, so indecisive!

I echo Timely’s sentiments. RPGs are what I like best, but it’s tough to complete the longer ones due to my current schedule. That’s why I didn’t get far in The Witcher 3.
Time is a cruel mistress.
I would say Racing (Formula 1) since it’s my bigget passion, then FPS, RPG and Platform with some Puzzle. Ok it’s a lot of genres my my everchanging mood leads me to like a lot of different kind of games…
You and I have similar tastes Well-Red Mage. I love platformers and RPGs, but loathe most first-person shooters. I grew up with 2D platformers in the NES and SNES days, and then 3D platformers for N64. I also played a bunch of RPGs starting around the first Pokemon games’ releases, and have tried to play as many as I could on all kinds of systems since. I also love adventure games as a third genre, whether it’s point-and-click, choose-your-own-adventure, or visual novel. I love the idea of a story-focused game that gives players time to think, make decisions, and solve puzzles. It scratches a big itch for me, and I love it!
That’s because we were separated at birth: I, red and you, black and white. You do sound like you pretty much described everything I like in gaming.
