“MAGE CAST” episode #034 – Sakaguchi’s Last Stand (Final Fantasy)
2 min read
On this Final Fantasy podcast, @AncientLitDude and I discuss what is arguably the most important game to The Well-Red Mage as a concept. Final Fantasy (One) unfolds its depths to us with talk on job classes, early proto-RPGs and learning to read, the speedrunner and randomizer communities, FF series context and overview, the sticky point of grinding, the development of Final Fantasy and the legendary status of its title, Uematsu’s body of work, comparing Uematsu and Mitsuda, the premise and story of the game, role-playing with blank avatars, telling a tale without character development, precedent in classic and ancient text, the Warriors of Light compared to later heroes and heroines in the franchise, silent protagonists, Final Fantasy as both science fiction and high fantasy, the Hero’s Journey, the value of myth and beliefs in light of rationality, learning unity without unanimity in civil conversation on controversial subjects, a word on science vs scientism, the ancient idea of 4 elements, battles, bugs, and the best that we could do with audience questions.
Poll Results! Who is your favorite basic job class in FF1?
Red Mage = 13
Black Mage = 10
White Mage = 5
Thief = 5
Fighter = 4
Monk/Black Belt = 4

Thanks for listening!
Red formerly ran The Well-Red Mage and now serves The Pixels as founder, writer, editor, and podcaster. He has undertaken a seemingly endless crusade to talk about the games themselves in the midst of a culture obsessed with the latest controversy, scandal, and news cycle about harassment, toxicity, and negativity. Hey thanks for the comment! I appreciate you hanging out and reading even though the site is still going through some crazy updates! I will need to contact somebody about that Like button functionality. I just noticed it yesterday 🙁
Going to start listening to it now. Just wanted to say that and that I’ve been reading all the Mages’ posts even though I haven’t been able to Like. Maybe it’s just me, but I haven’t been able to see the Like button for several days now. It just shows stuck on loading for me (Windows 10, Firefox 70). Thought maybe it would correct itself in a day or so, but so far, no dice.
Woot! Three cheers For RM! Hip Hip Horray!
I have one hip, and it don’t lie! 😛
