"PlayStation Replication Project: Success!"

PlayStation games without a case find a new home: I affordably custom printed new inserts and salvaged new cases myself!

“[Something something] is a thing of beauty.”

-Can’t remember the quote

For some reason, I can tolerate owning cartridges without boxes or cases (or even dust protectors) for Atari 2600, Vectrex, N64, NES, or SNES, but loose PS1 discs floating around in unmarked paper sleeves makes me red-faced. I can’t abide it.

So, I’ve undertaken a long-term, slow-going project to replicate PlayStation One cases, complete with print-out inserts (no manuals, of course). Today, I printed out on glossy papers my very first attempt: The Legend of Dragoon. I was excited to pick up this JRPG online in the hopes of actually finishing it this time around, but I was disappointed when it came in the mail without a case. It was a gamble from GameStop.

Here’s the full image I used for the cover (in the future, I’ll brighten it just slightly for a less dull result):

And here are some pics I took of the whole caboodle. I used Photoshop to play around with a little sizing and spacing, and a paper trimmer to get exact edges. I’m pretty happy with it! Much better than shelling out another $25-ish to get an original empty case online.

Next, Brave Fencer Musashi and Darkstalkers! Special thanks to my friends @CardiacDrop and @RetroGifMonster for sharing some tips and resources!

If you have a lot of PS1 games in need of cases, I can recommend this affordable method.

  1. Very nice! Like you, I can understand getting rid of boxes for games since they crush easily and stuff, but I like everything else to be in a case. It’s one of the reasons I’ve been hesitant to order from GameStop and turn to paying more on eBay/Amazon/etc. just to know I’m getting one. For you to make such an accurate replica though, bravo! You have much more patience and skill than me.
